WSET Level 1 Award in Wine Zoom Course
This course consistes of four 1.5 hour Zoom classes with your instructor. Each class will consist of one hour of instruction and then a 30 minuite tasting discussion. A minimum of three hours of individual study per week is recommended to successfully complete the course. Tasting is an essential part of this course. The Independent offers a supplementary 10 bottle case that can be purchased separately. These wines will be used in guided online tastings with your educator and are strongly encouraged. These wines will be available for pick up or delivery one week before the start of the course.

Level 1 course offers a well-rounded introduction to wine, focusing on wine tasting technique, major wines of the world, and food and wine pairing principles. Consider this class if you are relatively new to wine and would like to expand your knowledge, especially your tasting skills, and move to the next level. Suitable for individuals with very little starting knowledge, or even none at all.

Who it’s for
Wine lovers, both consumer-level and those entering the wine or hospitality trade who have limited wine knowledge. Level 1 is optional. Those who already feel comfortable around wine may begin studying at Level 2.

What you’ll learn
The main styles and types of wine, the characteristics of the primary wine grape varieties, food pairings, wine service and tasting technique and the legal and health issues surrounding wine and service.

How the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Online Course is conducted

  • The course itself is conducted through four 1.5 hour Zoom classes online, however you take the exam in-person at The Independent in limited numbers and adhering to social distancing guidelines.

  • You will be advised but not required to buy and taste certain wines on your own.

  • The Independent offers a wine box of 10 wines to be used for the guided tastings. These wines are purchased separately from the class. Purchasing these wines is not a requirement in order to complete the course but is highly recomended.

Technical Requirements

  • Access to a computer (recommended) and/or HTML5 compatible mobile or tablet with the following minimum requirements: Internet Explorer 10, Firefox 25.0, Safari 6, Chrome 30.0 or other HTML5 compatible; web browser with Javascript and cookies** enabled; Adobe Reader XI or equivalent; Internet access (broadband recommended)

How and when you take the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines Exam

  • You take your WSET Level 1 Award Exam in person at The Independent.

  • The date for the exam will be listed, however is subject to change based on COVID-19 restrictions.

  • Students are expected to arrive at the exam venue on the scheduled date and time with their photo ID, two pencils and an eraser.

  • WSET Level 1 Award Exam contains 30 multiple choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. The passing score required to receive the WSET Level 1 Award in Wine Certificate is 70%.

  • The exam takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, including the exam instructions and the 45- minute multiple-choice test.

  • You will receive your exam result via email approximately 3 weeks after your exam date. Receiving your certificate may take one or two additional weeks.

Must be at least 21 years of age

Refunds and Exam Re-Sit Fee
Students will be issued a full refund for classes if they notify IWEC by email (joanne@theindependentnola.com) within ten days before the start of the class. No refunds will be issued for cancelations less than ten days before the start of the class, however if a student is unable to attend, they can sign up for a class at a later date and the class fee can be rolled over to cover the new class. Students may change their registered exam date by contacting IWEC in writing by email joanne@theindependentnola.com at least 15 days prior to the scheduled exam date.
